Abraham Lincoln was assassinated on this day, April 14, 1865 about 10 PM at Ford's Theater, Washington D. C. by John Wilkes Booth.  The American Civil War had just ended, five days prior.

Today is April 14, 2012.  I always take time to remember Abraham Lincoln on this date, and reflect and ponder on how the nation would have been different, or better, had he not been assassinated.  What were his plans for Reconstruction?  "Let 'em up easy", Lincoln was quoted as saying about how the South should be treated after the war.  This statement, and his last public speech, can only hint as to the policies he would have pursued to "bind up the nations wounds".

Abraham Lincoln, the only President of the United States to have presided over a civil war, won a re-election bid during a civil war, and the only one to win a civil war, was cut down shortly after the official surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia to the Army of the Potomac.
